Hedvig Jalhed

International Relations Coordinator & Project Manager at Malmö Academy of Music, Lund University

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I am a professionally trained opera singer and besides working as both teacher and administrator in different academies around Sweden, I am artistic director for one opera festival and one chamber opera company. My main education is in Music and Opera, but I have also been working with and studying design, languages and project management for many years. In early 2022, I finished my doctoral dissertation in Performance in Theater and Music Drama at the University in Gothenburg and am now continuing my artistic research at the Academy of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University. My research interests concern how game design can be combined with music theatre in experimental chamber opera. Although I have been living in Malmö and Stockholm for many years, I now commute from the country side of the Swedish west coast where I was born and raised.

WHAT IS YOUR PATH TO THE CURRENT POSITION?

After have being on leave for my PhD studies, the possibility to become international relations coordinator came up at the Academy of Music in Malmö, where I have been working in different positions since 2010. I am currently combining these tasks with other administrative work for the Performance Programmes in Music and Church Music.

WHAT IS YOUR PASSION IN YOUR JOB?

I love working with questions about how to broaden our horizons as musicians and how we can find common interests and positive exchange. It is very meaningful to see new musical encounters arising and new contacts being made in order to keep the discussions about music going. My hope is to see both my artistic and administrative work result in musical products, in some way or another. Music must keep evolving in different directions to be relevant and sometimes, your best friends - and most energizing opponents - are found outside your own community!
