Project Lithuania, Latvia, Austria - TOGETHER

Joining forces of Nordplus and Erasmus mobility

Folk instruments department of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA), which celebrated 75 years in 2020, organized a gathering of national music instrument students and teachers in February 23-27.

Latvian kuokle was presented by Head of Department of Kuokle and Guitar, lecturer Anda Eglite and students Samanta Ceruka and Liga Grike from the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music (with NordClassic support). Professor Wilfried Scarf from Anton Bruckner Privat University of Music, Theatre and Dance Linz, Austria was invited in frames of Erasmus and he presented Austrian national string instrument instrument citra.

Masterclasses were a central activity of the gathering. Teachers shared their knowledge of professional performance, discussed the repertoire for national music instruments and wider cooperation opportunities.

Concerts were performed in the Grand Hall of the LMTA (Vilnius), and in the Grand Hall of the Kaunas Juozas Gruodis Conservatoire (Kaunas). Teachers from Latvia, Lithuania and Austria each performed one selected piece best revealing a specificity of the instrument and sound: Wilfried Scarf played his own piece for citra, Anda Eglite presented composition for kuokle by Latvian composer Liga Antchevska, and Aistė Bružaityė performed a piece for kanklės by Lithuanian composer Indrė Stakvilė.

Cooperation of national string instrument performance between the three schools had a continuation during the pandemic period. The next step were the online masterclasses of professor Wilfried Scarf for LMTA kanklės students via Zoom in December 2020.

Future plans include an enlargement of virtual exchanges – crossings of the masterclasses for national string instruments. Teachers and students of Estonian kannel and Finnish kantele will be invited to join the cooperation with NordClassic support.
